The player offers the same choice of digital and analogue connections as per the ‘Classic’; RCA & Toslink digital outputs, Left/Right 2-channel outputs, headphone socket. New is the USB 2.0 input for accessing music and photos via USB drive and the neat SD slot for photos and music.

Inside the Touch, the design is very different from the SB3, Classic. Component size has been scaled down, circuit design and layout improved significantly. We counted no fewer than 7 regulated DC supplies; the tiny SOT23-5 regulators have the task of supplying the 3.3V (digital), 4.0V & 5.0V (analogue) power.

The upgraded Touch is a highly capable streaming player, the best we have heard in its price bracket! The sound has a cleaner presentation from the lowest frequencies through to the highs, is more open, better focus, with a marked reduction in digital artefacts such as glare and hardening. Music has substance and depth, low frequencies benefit from increased weight with the highs sounding sweeter, more natural. Pace, rhythm are excellent, the listening experience is highly musical with every genre of music we listened too.

There are numerous setup options with the Squeezebox, the choice of using the integrated line-out or adding a separate DAC, using the switching power supply or adding a higher grade linear, etc. We have a range of modifications to suit individual setup and budget.
