Saturn’s strengths are in its musicality, clean detailed presentation and
expressive music making. The players ability to coherently string together
notes with good musical timing, tempo means you are drawn into the music
rather than presented with a fanciful amount of detail but ultimately left
uninvolved. The Rega player is also very inept at creating a good stereo
image, with a realistic sense of that ‘live’ atmosphere created by performers,
there instruments and the venue. The Saturn gets the fundamentals of the music
right and where so many CD players fail to invoke emotion this players works up
a sense of enjoyment and appreciation of the music.
Given the Rega Saturns compelling sound we were
keen to hear how much more performance we could wring out of its circuits
without altering or spoiling its fine character. From the 20+ years of
experience with components, there synergy and balance behind us we set the task
of taking the sound quality of the Rega Saturn to a much higher performance
level, to create a player which could rub shoulders with equipment way above
its price tag. Our ongoing quest to hear ‘analogue’ reproduction from CD has
taught us that it is achieving lowest power supply noise, lowest jitter,
maintaining signal integrity throughout and using the finest audio components
is key, and it is these areas we hone in on with the Saturn.
