OPPO
BDP-93EU modifications have been developed by Audiocom to push the performance
envelope of 3D Blu-ray to the next level. Like the BDP-83, our aim with the 93 is to extract
every last ounce of performance from the Marvell KYOTO G2, OP8531 chipsets to
deliver the best possible Blu-ray picture and sound. The BDP-93 is such an
accomplished player with Blu-ray or DVD, that we have designed the upgrades to
specifically target all the areas that maximise its already fine
achievements. These targeted areas are removing jitter, resonance
control, reducing AC power supply noise, reducing DC power supply noise,
EMI/RFI reduction. With all these sectors of the player improved the players
performance puts is in a class of its own regardless of price!
What’s
New in the 93?
The
BDP-93 has a new BD-Drive, the transport is a custom-built loader made by Tohei
Group of Japan, the laser pick-up is still Sony. The laser pickup is
still Sony. During development Oppo have worked closely with Tohei to
control and isolate the vibration caused by the high rotation speed and heavy
motor parts of the Sony laser pickup. Key new features include; Dual HDMI
outputs, Wireless-N networking and eSATA port in addition to two USB ports.
Oppo have clearly focused on Blu-ray and DVD image quality for the BDP-93, with
less attention to 2-channel or 7.1-channel sound. This considered the 93 is
better suited to the video user where the HDMI output might be connected to a
HD-TV or AV processor. The 7.1-channel sound is very good within its class, but
those seeking higher-end performance should consider the Oppo BDP-95 3D Blu-ray Player.
The
starting point for our BDP-93 mods was to improve the switching power supply.
The parts selected for the task are based on delivering the optimum impedance,
ESR, capacitance value at each circuit node, bypassing and decoupling. A
capacitor has a ripple voltage (seen as noise on the supply voltage)
proportional to the ESR of the capacitor. By selecting the best grade low ESR
capacitors we drastically reduce ESR which results in lower noise.
Step two
was to improve the player master clock. The
Oppo BDP-93 has 4 clocks, but we are only concerned with the ‘master clock’ for
the core processer, the OP8531 chipset. The OP8531 has a built-in ‘Pierce
Oscillator’ (inverter gate) the external quartz crystal provides the required
clock frequency. This type of oscillator is simple to implement but has the
worst arrangement for high phase noise, jitter. The Pierce Gate receives
noise from the hundreds of switching processes of the OP8521G chipset which is
transferred to the output of the clock signal. We replace the Pierce Oscillator
with the Superclock 4. With the OP8531 referenced to an ultra-low jitter
external clock jitter is significantly reduced with significant improvements to
all video, audio formats and video and audio outputs.
The clock
will only perform as well as the power supply that feeds it, less power supply
noise in this case = less phase noise. To achieve the quietest power supply
performance we installed a Bybee Music Rail™ following a regulator output. This
is a compact device which reduces signal and power supply noise up to 45 db,
achieving limit to the noise floor of 20 nV per root Hertz.
